Emotional Intelligence

Through too much work on myself to overcome my past, I have learned to be emotionally intelligent enough to decode/understand/explain other people’s emotions, sometimes when they don’t know it’s happening, and also anticipate their responses to emotions. Anticipating emotions is what’s kept me safe my whole life, it’s the basis for my catastrophic thinking. If I’m ready for anything, especially the worst, I’m always ready.

But here’s the thing. Some people are just not prepared (and some may never be) to receive emotionally truthful information . It took me such a long time to understand that, that some people are just emotionally injured for a variety of reasons, they don’t want healing, and no amount of understanding or explaining or mediating can help. Some people just simply don’t want to know, don’t want to acknowledge, don’t want the real truth to exist, or have things they want suppressed forever.

Now that we’ve discussed emotional intelligence in therapy enough I’ve come to understand that I now have to work to prioritize my own emotions and boundaries. I’ve spent so much time reading emotions, trying to “help”, fix, rescue, care, that I’ve definitely not spent enough time looking inward. I deserve to treat my own emotions with as much care as I do others.
